The “Chiodino” sideboard, by Marika Lamarina and Giorgia Bevilacqua
from the Accademia di Belle Arti G.B. Tiepolo di Udine,
wins the fourth edition of the contest WunderWood.

The jury awarded “Chiodino” for its ability to integrate functionality, interactivity, and evocative value.
The project reinterprets the classic pegboard game, transforming it into a contemporary piece of furniture that educates creativity and composition. Its structure recalls the aesthetics of LEGO bricks, but with a sober and elegant language that creates an original balance between play and design, between memory and contemporaneity. The oak finish gives the piece a delicate and natural texture, while the contrast with the brightly colored wooden pegs creates a harmonious visual balance. Inside, the sideboard has spacious and functional compartments, a central drawer, and adjustable shelves. The model is also fully customizable in terms of size and finish to suit different domestic and educational contexts.

THE CONTEST

The 2025 edition of WunderWood invited students from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts (Milan), the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana, the G.B. Tiepolo Academy of Fine Arts (Udine), and the Academy of Fine Arts in Lecce to design a wooden storage unit inspired by the theme “Ludens Mobile”, distinguishing themselves for creativity, innovation, and design consistency.
The exceptional jury was composed of Anty Pansera, design critic and historian; Carlo Piemonte, General Manager of Cluster legno arredo casa FVG; Claudio Gambardella, former Full Professor of Industrial Design, DADI/Vanvitelli; Claudio Papa – designer and Vice President of ADI Friuli Venezia Giulia delegation, Marina Jonna – architect, journalist, and Editor At Large for Design Diffusion World, Patrizia Moroso – Art Director Moroso S.p.A, and Sandro Fabbro – owner of Fabbro Arredi, awarded four special mentions in addition to the first prize.
The jury recognized the project’s originality and creativity, quality and relevance of design, aesthetic value, and conceptual and narrative consistency. The idea behind it starts from a recovery of the emotional values of childhood through interaction with a game, stimulating creativity within the family and becoming a place for socialization. Its production is accessible: Chiodino is a piece of furniture that reduces waste and is therefore highly sustainable. It can also be modified in size without losing its primary concept.

The two winning students participated in the creation of their project with Fabbro Arredi, which accompanied them on a training course through the various stages of production, from analysis to technical design and assembly. One of the objectives of the competition is to offer students a training experience that promotes the development of integrative skills and abilities. The winning piece of furniture will be promoted and exhibited at exhibitions in Italy and abroad.
